LaSalle Fish and Wildlife Area Loop
- The hike starts on the edge of a lake called the Black Oak Bayou. From there, you’ll start hiking along the bank of the Kankakee River.
- Wetlands dominate the landscape at this park, but you’ll also see prairie, savanna, and woodland.
- The wetlands are often alive with swallows soaring among the dead trees and turtles perched on logs in the water.
- Many of the ponds along the trail are actually former curves in the Kankakee River.
- The levee—which is about 15 feet above the surrounding landscape—provides a bird’s-eye view of the river and the nearby marshes and woodland.
